PortableCores

Introduction

PortableCores is an on-line community of engineers with a common interest in FPGAs and their application.

You can visit it at www.portablecores.com

PortableCores takes its name from the electronic term “core”, a "ready to use" electronic module that undertakes a certain task. If the "core" is compatible and reusable throughout a wide range of FPGAs we also call it "portable".

All consumer electronic products, like cell phones, computers, or home appliances use cores to reduce new product development time. There is a wide range of cores available in the market but only accessible to a minority of engineers. Most of them have commercial licences, are expensive and are compatible only with a small variety of FPGAs that represent less than 10% of the market.

PortableCores aims to solve some of the issues related to core design and use. With SiliconSea Diver, distributed free of cost to users of the community, engineers can create cores compatible with more than 90% of the FPGAs available in the market. The cores are shared among the community and users can download them and test them for free.

PortableCores connects industry users and businesses with economical and effective tools like forums, updated web resources and free design tools. And above all, "portable cores" that significantly reduce the effort required to develop FPGA based electronic devices.

Piracy

According to a report published by the BSA, global software piracy increased by 1% in 2007, rising to a total of 61%, and generating losses in some countries of up to 400% the value of the previous year.
